The ironic thing was the picture that I took that won the gift card was taken on the overpass of lamar and 435, which was clearly visible from our 10th floor window. Ha. It was only fitting that Jewel and I would go to the Royals vs. Cardinals game. My city vs. her city. I was pretty confident in the boys in blue. Home field advantage, friday night fireworks. My attitude shifted a bit after Davies gave up 8 runs and 9 hits in 3 innings... I mean, come on.

One positive thing did come out of the game though, aaron mitchum made it on the jumbotron doing his famous circle dance.

Meadowlark Hill Apartments

Our lease is almost up at Meadowlark Hill Apartments. We've been living there for 14 months now. No complaints really, all utilities paid, rent isn't "late" until 6 days after its due (just paid May's rent today). We knew it was ghetto when we moved in. But we definitely didn't know it was haunted...

A few months after we moved in, we were just beginning to meet out neighbors. Our apartment was in the corner, and the building to the west of us is a row of town homes. We had me the family in the town-home directly next to us a few times, and found out they were getting ready to move out. They told us some weird stuff had been happening and they were a little spooked. The next day we came home and saw a group of people going in and out of the apartment with various gadgets and handheld devices. Apparently they had hired some ghost hunters to check out their apartment. So to make a long story short, they moved out, we thought they were crazy, new family moved in, end of story...

This last saturday night though, I went to The Killers concert with some KUMC friends. We were driving home and my friend Angee said we could all go to her place and hang out. She said she lived at 87th and metcalf, and I told her I lived right down the street. She asked me what apartment complex and I proudly stated "I live in meadowlark hill apartments, all utilities paid, rent isn't due until 6 days after..." "Oh really? I use to live there with my son and ex-husband a few years ago" she said. But we had to move out of our town home because some weird stuff was happening... This is when I flipped out. I asked her where in the complex she had lived, and she clearly described the town home right next to mine. She had lived there a few years before my roommates and I had moved in, and had seen the same stuff the family we met had seen...

I quickly found out why we were getting such a good deal on our apartment...

"Biggest Winner" update

went to the gym with TJ today. hadn't been there in a few months. if you have been following my blog for a while, you know that TJ and I are having a little friendly competition called "The Biggest Winner." Tired of our slenderness, we wanted to put some weight on our frames.

TJ has pretty much dominated the competition, gaining some 10 or so lbs. He eats a steady diet of eggs, tuna, protein shakes, raw steaks, blood, nails, etc. and works out frequently. Myself on the other hand, hadnt worked out in a while, and wasn't eating all that healthy. To be completely honest, I had McDee's 3 times this week for breakfast. Which sounds gross but it might not be as unhealthy as we think!

So I get to the gym today and TJ and I go over to the scale. He steps on it, and yup, he's up 10lbs from his starting weight. The I hop on...and I lost 5 lbs? How is that even possible? Now Im not saying this to brag, because we all know the goal is to try and GAIN weight, but I ate McDonald's 3 times in a week, hadn't worked out in 3 months, and I LOST 5 lbs.

Explain that one.

What a good Sunday. Drove to church, rain falling, ryan adams love is hell on the cd player. Thats about the perfect way to start off the day in my opinion.

So I have a new respect for this guy after this morning. His respect level was already about a 9.8 on a 0-10 scale, but now its more than that. TJ asked me a couple weeks ago to speak this morning for the youthgroup (TJ is the youth pastor at Hillcrest Blue Valley, and my roommate). It had been a while since I had spoken for a group of kids, and I forgot how much work went into a talk. I was up until about 12:30 saturday night polishing things up.

I got to church early to set stuff up, played for worship during the main service, and then went up stairs to the youth group to get everything set up. The talk went well (there were 5 kids there) and I helped take everything down and headed home, exhausted.

Passenger landed plane with "focused fear"

I thought this news story was pretty cool. Probably due to the fact that I day dream about this scenario happening to me quite often. Daily in fact.

(CNN) -- "A man who landed a plane with the assistance of air traffic controllers after the pilot fell unconscious and died said Monday he was "still in a daze of adrenaline."

"White recalled watching and listening as the pilot, Joe Cabuk, conducted his "climb checklist" upon takeoff from Florida. After the checklist was complete, he said, Cabuk laid his book down."

About a minute later, White told WINK, he looked at Cabuk, and "he was just sitting there."

"That's when I kind of looked at him for a minute, probably two, three seconds, and I touched him on the shoulder. I said, 'Joe! Joe!, and that's when his head rolled over to the side, and his eyes rolled back in his head, and his arm fell off the armrest ... and I knew if he wasn't gone then, he was in deep distress, but we were in trouble."

"Air traffic controllers at Miami Center helped White at first, talking him through disengaging the autopilot, turning the plane and beginning his descent. They then handed the plane over to air traffic control at Fort Myers' Southwest Florida International Airport."

"Asked about his mindset, White said, "I lost it" after landing. His emotion can be clearly heard on the recording as he told air traffic controllers in a shaky voice, "We're down, buddy. Thank you."

My day dreams are very similar except when I land the plane there are usually a few hundred thousand people awaiting on the runway to cheer me on as I walk down the stairs of the plane with my aviators on and into my limo.

back from mexico. absolutely amazing trip. the mexico blogs will come soon, but im still processing stuff.

speaking about processing stuff...im trying to edit all my photos from the trip. this is a difficult task considering i shot 10GB. Which on my camera is roughly 1500 pictures. you can click here and see some that i've posted.

its crazy to think that i have less than 2 months of college left. but honestly, all i can think about is doing art. lately ive just been so burnt out with school and with hospitals and with nursing and all i want to do is go take pictures or play music. myself along with all of the other nursing students are finding out that all of the jobs that were "guaranteed" to get after graduation are not really there. or the jobs are there but for every job there are 50 applicants.

maybe God is using my love for art to alleviate any anxieties of not finding a job. honestly, if i don't have a job right away, big deal. it will just give me an excuse to do what i love. art.

As you know, a few months ago I bought a Nikon D90. (Please let me know if I talk about it too much or if its getting in between our relationship). I was online a while ago and decided I would look to see if I could find any photo contests. It made sense to try and profit from my latest purchase. After searching for a while, I found a local competition put on by The Mid-America Regional Council. Don't ask me what they're all about, but they had advertised a photo contest with "Transportation" as the category. They were looking for pictures of what we valued as far as transportation goes in KC. I browsed my iphoto library in search of a fitting picture and decided upon this one:
That was back in December, and I just heard back from them last week letting me know I had won first place in my category and would be sent my "free night stay in the Overland Park Marriott Hotel" in the mail.

Interesting prize. Whats even more interesting is that you can see the hotel in the background of my picture. Now comes the question...what to do with my complementary stay in the Marriott. Stay tuned for the decision.

Saw Ryan Adams last night. He has basically been the soundtrack to my college years, so I was super pumped to see him. The show was originally scheduled for a few months ago but a couple guys in the band got sick the night they were supposed to play so they postponed the show until last night. So I was thinking they would play an even better show for us. Heres my thoughts on last night:

-Short set! He played for probably an hour and 15 min, plus a 10 min intermission. You would think that because he cancelled on us the first time he would give us a little more?
-Ryan's voice sounded freaking incredible.
-Ryan and Neils harmonies were unreal.
-John Graboff is the coolest man alive.
-From now on, whenever an artist comes that I really want to see (like Ryan) im going to buy the most expensive seats no matter what. Last night we were up top in the balcony and there was a group of people behind us that were just trashed and were yelling and what not which totally ruined it.
-Their instrumental jams in the songs were amazing. Ryan can freaking shred.

British Gym Replaces Dumbbells With Human Weights

Does anyone else have trouble getting motivated to go to the gym? Well i have found the perfect solution to this problem. And if its true, then it is quite possibly the weirdest creepiest thing I have ever seen.

"A British gym is trying to add human interest to otherwise dreary workouts by replacing traditional dumbbell weights with human ones. The Gymbox chain gym in central London says fitness enthusiasts can now swap their usual lumps of metal for human beings in a range of shapes and sizes.

According to the gym's owner Richard Hilton, it's all about visualizing strength.

"Creating a mental image or intention of what you want to happen or feel is proven to improve physical and psychological performance," he said in a statement. "The human weight lifting apparatus ... is the ultimate embodiment of visualization theory.

The human weights range from the "Dainty Dwarf" 32-year-old Arti Shah, who weighs just 66 pounds up to the "Super Human" weight of 37-year-old — and 342 pound — Matt Barnard."

Its amazing how attached you can get to an inanimate object. When I was younger I use to feel really sorry for my old stuffed animals when I got a new one. I didnt want them to think that I didnt like them anymore.

Just a few hours ago I sold my guitar. I just didnt play it enough anymore and kind of needed the extra cash. So I put it up on craigslist and this guy emailed me saying he wanted to come play it. So earlier this afternoon this middle aged man comes to my house to look at it. I open the case and gently hand it over to him. As he is sitting there plucking a few strings (the man had no idea how to play) memories started flashing back. Like trips I had taken with the guitar, the summer I bought it, songs that I had played...I was paying no attention to this man what so ever, just reliving the past.

So after looking it over for a bit, he pulls out his wallet and asks me how much. I then proceeded to try and convince him that he should check around some other places, you know, buy myself some time. Maybe I shouldnt even sell it at all i thought. No, I think im gonna go ahead and buy it, he said. So he counts out the cash and puts it in my hand. He puts the guitar back in the case, and walks back out to his car.

There I was, standing in the doorway, huge wad of cash in hand, watching some old guy drive off with a piece of my past, my guitar.

I dont think I would call myself skinny, but on the spectrum of body size, I definitely lean towards the thin side. The same goes for my roommates. As part of our combined new years resolutions, we all want to get back into shape and put some meat on our bones (easier said than done, ive been the same weight since i was 17). So we decided to have a competition.

We all joined the Matt Ross Community Center and are trying our best to work out at least 3 times a week. Along with working out we are eating everything in sight.

As I sit here writing this, my little weather widget thing tells me that its a casual 15 degrees outside. Miserable. Although, the cold weather does make drinking hot beverages much more enjoyable. I think over 95% of the liquids I drink in a day are hot. Is that bad? Coffee is always going to be a staple item on daily drink list, but let me take this time to introduce to you a drink that you might not have heard of...

African Rooibos tea. aka "Red Tea."

"Hey greg, have you heard of the new kind of tea people are starting to drink called red tea?" my friend said very naively. "Yes i have, except that I heard about it 10 years ago, and was the first one to drink it." I responded in a less than friendly tone.

Actually it was more like 5 years ago, and my good buddy aaron introduced it to me. The tea originates from south africa, where it has been used for generations. The leaves are grown only in a small area in the Cederberg region of the Western Cape providence. After harvesting the leaves, they are oxidized, where the leaves obtain their distinct reddish color. The best thing about red tea though is the fact that its naturally caffeine free. This makes it enjoyable any time of the day. Its calming effects soothe the body and give you a relaxing buzz almost.

The best red tea in Kansas City that I have found is at latte land on 79th and state line. Just go in and ask for a medium cup of african rooibos. I promise you wont be disappointed.

One more semester

Today is my last day of Christmas break and to be quite honest im actually ready to start back. Im the kind of person that needs structure in my life and without it I go nuts. Thats a whole other blog entry though...

Did a lot of fun things over break. Saw a ton of people i havent seen in a long time, went to St. Louis with the fam.

Adventures in Tea

So my friend and I were down at crown centerthe other day and went into this tea store to look around. I asked the guy that was working if i could smell some of the tea leaves, and he goes well why dont i just brew you a cup and you can taste some?

We were the only ones in the store and so he sat us down and brewed 3 or 4 different teas for us to sample and told us just about everything there is to know about tea. Back in China he owns his own business that grows white, green, and red tea that the then ship all over the world. We ended up talking to him for like 2 hours.

I just love hearing peoples stories and seeing people really passionate about things, like tea.

Nigerian Celebration

This past friday night was probably the most fun ive had in a long time. You might remember my classmate and good friend Jacob from an earlier post.

Jacob is one of the coolest people i know. Too many stories to fit in a blog post. But anyways, he invited myself and a couple other guys from our class to a party/celebration with some of his friends from Nigeria that are living in the states. Its their custom that every year towards the end of the year they come together and pray, and thank God for the past year and ask his blessing for the following year.
Shortly after we got there, the women arrived with all of the food. They had gone out to a farm earlier that day and bought a goat which they then smoked the meat and prepared a bunch of other dishes. Ive done my fair share of traveling and trying different foods and so I was really excited to try something new.
After we ate, it turned into a huge dance party that went on for hours. Everyone was so generous and hospitable and didnt laugh too much at our terrible dancing. Amazing night.

Polaroid

Ive known this for a while but an article on cnn.com today reminded me of the unfortunate fate of polaroid film. It was announced back in february of 09 that polaroid would stop production of their instant film. With everything going digital, polaroid was feeling the pressure with trying to stay up with the current technology.

I forget who I was having this conversation with recently but there is a sense of mystery and magic with polaroid film that I love. How is it possible for the image to just appear before youre eyes. I feel like I can conceptualize the latest technology so much better than the old. I can understand how a cd or an mp3 works...just a series of codes that the computer or cd player reads. But how the heck does a record player work. How can the tiny little grooves in a piece of vinyl produce beautiful music. I know essentially how a digital camera works. But how in the world can you take a picture with a polaroid camera and watch it appear right there in your hand.

Good news though www.savepolaroid.com has on their website that some company picked up the license for polaroid film and should start production in early 2009. I hope this is true...

Back in college (I guess I have one more semester until I can officially say that) I did the "no shave november" thing, "mustache march" etc. Every month had its own style of facial hair it seemed. The holiday beard is in a league of its own however. Its no longer a silly dorm room ritual, but a statement that says "seasons greetings."

Its a common occurrence with me, im driving in my car with the radio going or im sitting in starbucks and some sweet song that i have never heard comes on. "Dang, this is a pretty cool song" i think so myself. Too proud to go up to the barista and ask if they could go check to see what the song is, and too lazy to try and look it up on the computer, i usually just write down a few words of the catchy hook and file it away in my wallet along with hundreds of other unknown song hooks that i have accumulated over the years. So just when i thought there was no hope for finding out who sang all these songs, there is hope...And it comes in the form of an application for the iphone and the T-mobile G1 (unfortunately not on my 5 year old sprint samsung).

The application is called Shazam, and basically: "If you hear a song on the radio you don't recognize, you hold your phone up to it, it recognizes what Shazam calls a digital fingerprint and will spit back that information to you." That information includes the name of the song, the band, the album, and where you can buy it.

Amazing.

I worked out today for the first time in about 2 months. It was a sorry sight to see. I started off like I usually do, with a nice warm-up on the eliptical (SP?) machine. I decided to go for 10 minutes instead of 15 just to take it easy this first time. My goodness i just about died. So those machines have a little screen that displays your pulse to let you know how good of a work out you are getting. After about 2 minutes my heart rate was up in the 140s. I looked over at machine next to me where a middle aged woman was elipticaling and quickly glanced and what her heart rate was. 120. And she had been there for atleast 10 minutes before me. I couldnt help but feel extremely embarrassed and ashamed of myself.

For the last 8 minutes of my eliptical machine workout i took my hands off the handles so it couldnt pick up my heart rate and pretended that i was barely breaking a sweat...

Genius

Came across a pretty cool news story today. NPR had a story on a couple of the winners of the "genius grant." The MacArthur foundation gave away 25 genius grants (500,000 bones) to people of all sorts of occupations. The winners were chosen for their creativity and their efforts to "make our world a better place." There were doctors, scientists, artists...

So NPR featured one of the winners named Walter Kitundu who is a "multimedia artist" who builds and creates hybrid instruments out of old turntables, stings and other stuff.

Making an instrument of my own thats completely unique has been something that I have wanted to try for a very long time, so i found this story particularly intriguing. This guy is freaking nuts.

Here is my favorite instrument.

Its called the "Rain Activated Acoustic Phonograph"

"Installed curbside on streets with an incline, this instrument uses runoff rainwater for power. When it rains soft music plays all over the city. The music also arrives during the spring thaw, accompanying the water's return to the sea. Neighborhood residents get to decide on the music."

He's made quite a few other instruments that are equally as cool, check em out on his website. He also has some videos of him demonstrating these.

I dont know if this guy is mildly autistic or not, (his bio says "Before you ask, I'm a perfectly normal and healthy guy, just a little geeky and different") he is definitely very eccentric to say the least. But basically, this guy has a couple of synthesizers and creates these insane beats. I have never seen someone play a keyboard like this guy. Enjoy...im off to guitar center to go play me some keyboards.

There are a lot of things that I am very thankful for. One of these things is that Andersons can grow pretty good beards. I have always taken pride in the beards that I can grow, and my complete lack of bald spots (on top of my head is beginning to become a different story).

Anyways, a couple weeks ago I treated myself to something that I had never experienced before. A hot towel shave. A few years ago after I came back from ecuador with a full beard, my buddy dan and I had talked about going to an old smokey barbershop and getting a hot towel shave with warm shaving cream and one of those oldschool straight razors. Well it turns out that no one does that anymore. Safety reasons I guess. I literally called every single barber shop in the city asking if they did old fashioned shaves and they all said they didnt. Then finnally we found a place...

Its called Sole Patch Barbershop. Yes kind of a lame name but its a really cool place. Funny thing is though before they opened Sole Patch, it use to be an old barbershop where "Bud the barber" would give me a Bull Cut and ask me about my girlfriends.

After deciding whether or not I should do it once i heard a hot towel shave was $25 I decided that I only live once so why not. (This is our year TJ!!!!!). So Aaron, Carter Posladek, Carter's friend and I met up at Sole Patch and dished out 25 bones for the BEST SHAVE OF OUR LIVES.

Most of my time has been spent at my favorite coffee shop reading books that i actually want to read. The rest of my time has been devoted to watching the olympics. As I watched the olympics i began to realize why they call America the "melting pot" of different cultures and ethnicities. In looking at all of our athletes, there is such a beautiful mix of ethnic backrounds. I havent found this diversity in other countries however. I got to experience this "melting pot" firsthand this morning.

My friend and fellow classmate Emeka "Jacob" Ogwudile had his swearing in ceremony this morning along with about 40 or 50 people from all over the world. It was such a powerful ceremony. Everybody that was swearing in stood up and stated their name and where they were from. I think there was something like 20 different countries represented. Pretty stinkin cool.

What really hit me though was how much we take our freedom and our rights for granted. Ive never really stopped to think about how blessed i am to be born into this country. In watching all of those people stand up and state where they were from, i couldnt help to think about what life must have been like for them there.

"Bigfoot" fails DNA test

One of the more disappointing stories in the news. You may have heard about the latest bigfoot finding, where two Georgia hikers say they have recovered the body of Sasquatch!

Its too bad though that "One of the two samples of DNA said to prove the existence of the Bigfoot came from a human and the other was 96 percent from an opossum, according to Curt Nelson, a scientist at the University of Minnesota who performed the DNA analysis."

Damn. So close.

in trying to create this blogsite i feel like im my dad learning how to check his email or use a cell phone. blogsite, is that what these things are called? anyhow...i thought it would be good to start one of these things up. i read so many other peoples blogs that i thought i might as well give back to the blogging community and chip in my part.
